*****Teacher Needs Help...Will Repay...Please Read*****

Hello,

I am a single mother of two children. I am also a third grade teacher. I am in need of a personal loan for $2,500. I recently had to move because the home I was renting for the past 4 years was foreclosed on because of the landlords' financial problems. As a result of these moving expenses, child related expenses, and an unexpected car repair, I have fallen behind on my bills.

*****I have a steady income so I do not want a hand-out. I will repay this loan with interest. I am even willing to set up automatic payments from my checking account to prove that I am "good" for the money.*****

If you need to speak with me furthur or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me....Thank You.

About teach12

I am a highly-educated and intelligent woman of 40.  I have been a teacher for the last 14 years and have recently become burdened with debt, the result of an unexpected break of engagement.  Additionally, last year's school schedule changed, as did our paychecks (went from 12 checks per year to 10).  Because of my debt, saving for the summer was nearly impossible.

Though paying my debts down would be ideal, my immediate need is to get through the summer.  I have a little money saved, as well as a summer job, but it isn't going to completely cover the gap (for rent, utilities, groceries; basic living expenses).  I am therefore asking anyone for help totaling approximately $6,000, just to get me through until October, when I will be receiving my first paycheck of the school year.  I welcome any help anyone can provide.  Thank you for reading and hopefully, understanding and helping.

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program

Through the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007, Congress created the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program that provides grants of up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families. If, after reading all of the information on this fact sheet, you are interested in learning more about the TEACH Grant Program, you should contact the financial aid office at the college where you will be enrolled.

Conditions

In exchange for receiving a TEACH Grant, you must agree to serve as a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves low-income students (see below for more information on high-need fields and schools serving low-income students). As a recipient of a TEACH Grant, you must teach for at least four academic years within eight calendar years of completing the program of study for which you received a TEACH Grant. IMPORTANT: If you fail to complete this service obligation, all amounts of TEACH Grants that you received will be converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. You must then repay this loan to the U.S. Department of Education. You will be charged interest from the date the grant(s) was disbursed. Note: TEACH Grant recipients will be given a 6-month grace period prior to entering repayment if a TEACH Grant is converted to a Direct Unsubsidized Loan.

Student Eligibility Requirements

To receive a TEACH Grant you must meet the following criteria:

  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSASM), although you do not have to demonstrate financial need.
  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  • Be enrolled as an undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, or graduate student in a postsecondary educational institution that has chosen to participate in the TEACH Grant Program.
  • Be enrolled in course work that is necessary to begin a career in teaching or plan to complete such course work. Such course work may include subject area courses (e.g., math courses for a student who intends to be a math teacher).
  • Meet certain academic achievement requirements (generally, scoring above the 75th percentile on a college admissions test or maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25).
  • Sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve (see below for more information on the TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve).

High-Need Field

High-need fields are the specific areas identified below?

  • Bilingual Education and English Language Acquisition.
  • Foreign Language.
  • Mathematics.
  • Reading Specialist.
  • Science.
  • Special Education.
  • Other identified teacher shortage areas as of the time you begin teaching in that field. These are teacher subject shortage areas (not geographic areas) that are listed in the Department of Educations Annual Teacher Shortage Area Nationwide Listing. To access the listing, please go to http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ope/pol/tsa.doc.

Schools Serving Low-Income Students

Schools serving low-income students include any elementary or secondary school that is listed in the Department of Educations Annual Directory of Designated Low-Income Schools for Teacher Cancellation Benefits. To access the Directory, please go to https://www.tcli.ed.gov/CBSWebApp/tcli/TCLIPubSchoolSearch.jsp.

TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve

Each year you receive a TEACH Grant, you must sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve that is available electronically on the TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve Web site. The TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve specifies the conditions under which the grant will be awarded, the teaching service requirements, and includes an acknowledgment by you that you understand that if you do not meet the teaching service requirements you must repay the grant as a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan, with interest accrued from the date the grant funds were disbursed. Specifically, the TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve will require the following:

  • For each TEACH Grant-eligible program for which you received TEACH Grant funds, you must serve as a full-time teacher for a total of at least four academic years within eight calendar years after you completed or withdrew from the academic program for which you received the TEACH Grant.
  • You must perform the teaching service as a highly-qualified teacher at a low-income school. The term highly-qualified teacher is defined in section 9101(23) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 or in section 602(10) of the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act.
  • Your teaching service must be in a high-need field.
  • You must comply with any other requirements that the Department of Education determines to be necessary.
  • If you do not complete the required teaching service obligation, TEACH Grant funds you received will be converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan that you must repay, with interest charged from the date of each TEACH Grant disbursement.

IMPORTANT REMINDER

If you receive a TEACH Grant but do not complete the required teaching service, as explained above, you will be required to repay the grants as a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, with interest charged from the date of each TEACH Grant disbursement.

Next Steps

If you are interested in learning more about the TEACH Grant Program, you should contact the financial aid office at the college where you will be enrolled to find out if they will participate in the TEACH Grant Program. See List of the TEACH Grant eligible institutions.

About Louise59

I am so embarrassed, but I can not provide the one present my 15 year old son has asked for this Christmas.  I work full time and have a part time second job, but since my husband quit his job a year ago, money has been exceptionally tight.  I'm a teacher, and I'm supposed to be a leader in my community, by donating food, toys for tots, and gifts for my students in my minority majority, high poverty school.  How can I give when I can't afford a $100 gift for my son - I tried to get his dream gift at Hastings this morning - stood in line in freezing weather for over an hour - but left empty handed.  I know I sound whiny - I sound that way even to myself.  I think about the death of a former student last year, to a brain tumor and the reality of that family facing another Christmas without their only child ... and I'm reduced to tears ... and again I am embarrassed.  Please pray for Evelyn's family and my family as we face this challenging Christmas.

About eslteacher

About two years ago, I began a new profession of teaching English to those of other languages.  It has been a rewarding and fruitful experience, but as you may know, teachers do not get paid a high salary especially those teaching abroad to foreign students.

For those unfamiliar with ESL/TEFL (English as a Second Language/Teaching English as a Foreign Language) it allows Native speakers like myself to spread the knowledge of English for those who wish to learn it in their home countries.  I have been a Certified ESL/TEFL/TESOL Instructor since 2007 and it has been an enjoyable experience.  As you may know, teachers in general do not get paid a high salary and ESL Teachers are paid even less.  ESL Teachers do not expect to become rich teaching English, they do it for other reasons.  I do it for C.A.R.E., four major reasons:

C-Cultures, infusing cultures and learning of yourself with others.

A-Achievement,knowing you have taught someone something in which they can use.

R-Results, the English they learn can be used to advance them in today's global economy.

E-Enrichment, providing a service in which communication can bring people together for years to come.

I am currently teaching in Ukraine and have been for the last two years, but I have a new teaching job opportunity in a new country that I would like to get to.  Not only for the chance of teaching new students in a new culture, but as there is a tremendous demand for language schools there.  Which in return, could lead to what I have been hoping to do, opening my own language center.  I have been planning this for months as the academic year was coming to a close at my current school, what I didn't plan for was my school not fulfilling their obligations in the contract for a year end completion bonus.  This completion bonus was a major part of my relocation funds.  Even though the summer has past and I continue to work towards my goal, it seems the end is moving farther away at a greater rate of speed than which I am going.

I am not asking for one individual to give the entire amount or pay the relocation expense, but only a small donation.  Even if it is the cost of the average fast food meal, it will be greatly appreciated.  If everyone just tells one friend and they donate, small donations can be very powerful.

Please visit my website at www.worldestiny.com (currently disabled, please feel free to visit the free web hosting site at http://worldestiny.freetzi.com) and see for yourself. Before my website was disabled it was ranked in the TOP 30 in Google search results for learning English online.  I would like to keep it running and eventually open my own learning center. I offer educational games and learning activities among other things for students and teachers.  I am just an honest person trying to create a better world through education, one student at a time.

As you can see, I am not simply begging for money or making a story for you to read.  But, in reality, a way to help more people other than just myself. If I wasn't serious about this, I wouldn't post my picture. But, I love this profession and the feeling I receive knowing that I am bettering someone's future.  I also give online English lessons as well, so I am not against working for someone who needs to learn.

I appreciate your time in reading my request.  Thank you.

About Paul32

I'm a high school teacher and coach in San Diego.  Our school has been desiginated a "Low-Income" school by the U.S. Dept. of Ed. and it has become increasingly hard to raise funds for much needed athletic equipment for our Track & Field and Cross Country programs.  Curently, we serve over 150 athletes in Cross Country and over 200 athletes in Track & Field.  Our programs are in need of replacing our outdated and highly used High Jump equipment and team uniforms, purchasing presently Non-Existant Pole Vault equipment, and aquiring a state-of-the-art electronic timing system so we can hold regular track meets and begin to hold invitational track meets to generate our own sources of income.  Any ammounts given to our program will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and God Bless

Need Financial help

I am currently going to college to get a degree in Early Childhood Education specializing in Science. I also have a daughter who will be starting college next summer. Right now I am surviving on Student loans. I am a mother with 4 children. I need help. I have been in school only since December and now have a loan of 36000.00, This is too much for me. I need a way to pay that back and to pay for me to finish college. I am also looking for a way to help my daughter fulfill her dream of going into graphic design. She is finishing school early because she has her credits. She is an honors student 9th in a class of 166. Her schooling is going to cost ruffly $25000 a year. With two of us in college it will be hard on my and the children financially. If you can help or know what I can do please let me know. Thanks Jennifer Ardis

Teaching Science

The following is a sampling of some great lesson plans found on

http://www.sciencenetlinks.com/

"A caterpillar's clever con game. I'm Bob Hirshon and this is Science Update.

Some fish, birds, and bugs trick other species into raising their young. Now, scientists have figured out how a European caterpillar takes this a step further: they invade ant colonies, and get treated even better than the actual ant larvae. Oxford University ecologist Jeremy Thomas says this is especially clear when food runs short.

Thomas:

So you actually get the bizarre situation of the ants cutting up their own small ant grubs and feeding them to these caterpillars.

Using tiny microphones and speakers, Thomas and his colleagues discovered that the caterpillars make sounds with their abdomens that mimic those of a queen ant. When the scientists played back recordings of caterpillars to worker ants, the ants showed protective behavior normally reserved for guarding the queen. I'm Bob Hirshon for AAAS, the Science Society.

Making Sense of the Research

In a recent episode of the popular TV crime series “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit,” a young woman shows up on the doorstep of an astonished couple, claiming to be their long-missing daughter. It turns out that the woman is a total stranger and a con artist, seeking attention and affection from her supposed “family.”

This situation is pretty far-fetched for humans, but in some animal species, it's common practice. Several kinds of birds and insects infiltrate other species' nests and reap the benefits of its care, at the expense of the swindled parents' actual offspring. This is a form of behavior called social parasitism: the invading species lives at the host's expense, just like a biological parasite steals food and energy from its host, except a social parasite does so through social rather than biological means.

Sometimes, a social parasite simply takes an undeserved share of the foster parents' food and protection. More often, it actively hogs the resources: for example, a bird called the cowbird lays its eggs in the nests of smaller birds, so that when the cowbird hatches, it can muscle its stepbrothers and stepsisters out of the way at feeding time. Cuckoos, another social parasite, eliminate competition altogether by hatching sooner than their host family's chicks, and instinctually pushing all the other eggs out of the nest.

The caterpillars in this study turn into lovely Alcon blue butterflies, but as you heard, they grow up under devastatingly false pretenses. Scientists already knew that although the caterpillars grow to be much larger than ant larvae, their heads resemble ant heads, and more importantly, they release chemicals that resemble those of the ants they parasitize. (Ants communicate mainly through odor-like chemical signals.)

While this explained how the ants accepted the caterpillars as one of their own, it didn't explain why the ants gave the caterpillars the royal treatment (literally, as it turns out). Unlike cuckoos or cowbirds, caterpillars didn't actively push aside their competition; the worker ants simply gave the caterpillars priority on their own. The scientists' discovery had two key components: first, the caterpillars made queen-like sounds, and second, recordings of those caterpillar sounds made the ants behave in ways they usually behave around the queen ant. So, it seems that the caterpillars use several different methods to infiltrate the ant nests and enjoy a privileged upbringing.

Social parasitism may seem like a free lunch, but it's actually very risky, kind of like spying is for people. If an impostor species is found out, it's probably curtains: for example, some songbirds recognize cuckoo and cowbird eggs and kick them out of the nests before they hatch. It's not clear why some species learn to fight social parasites while others don't. As for why this caterpillar goes to such lengths to infiltrate ant societies, Thomas says that the protection and nourishment that ant nest affords must be far better than anything butterflies could construct on their own. And since successful caterpillars live under ant care for more than a year, the con game seems to have a worthwhile payoff.

Now try and answer these questions:

  1. What is a social parasite? In what way do these caterpillars practice social parasitism?
  2. What strategies have the caterpillars developed to get accepted and pampered by the worker ants?
  3. Social parasites can successfully pass themselves off as another species' offspring, despite obvious physical differences (for example, larger size). What does this say about differences between how animals and people perceive the world? "

BrainMass Hires Online Teaching Assistants

Join our Community of Online Teaching Assistants

We are an inclusive community of graduate thinkers from around the world. We all have unique backgrounds, skill-sets and experiences that make our individual services extremely valuable to others. Take a quick browse through the Online TA Profiles and you will realize just how far-reaching the talents of our members are.

The intent of the BrainMass initiative is to provide a structured system for mobilizing this talent pool. This community is focused on growth. We believe that if every member contributes, we will be able to achieve successes far greater than any one of us can alone.

The common interests of our community are: teaching students, earning supplemental income, collaborating academically on internal projects, sharing and creating new knowledge, changing the way students learn, and communicating actively with the outside world.

Please take a moment to read the requirements below. If you think this position is right for you, proceed by filling out the Online Registration Form. Please note that this is NOT intended to be a full-time position. The amount of work available varies depending on the subject areas you are registered in, but for all members of our Community, this opportunity is intended to be part-time only.

  1. Required Qualifications

Applicants may register as Online TAs if they are currently working on, or have obtained, a graduate-level (Masters or PhD) degree from an accredited university.

We accept Online TAs from all university departments of study. We do, however, reserve the right to reject applicants in subject areas that already have enough members to serve our current demand. In these cases, we will hold on to the applicant's registration form and contact them when we are able to accept new members.

  2. Job Expectations

The following is expected of the Online TA:

    • Adherence to the Guidelines for Responding to Postings and Essays
    • Prompt response to emails and commitment to the creation of Solutions/Reviews
    • Responses that are accurate to the best of the Online TA's knowledge
    • Responses that are written in a step-by-step manner in order to aid the student in learning the concepts at hand
    • Restraint from the use of any foul language, prejudiced remarks, or the passing of personal contact information (phone numbers, email addresses, etc.) through the BrainMass system
    • Submissions to the Solution Library to help us increase the amount of material available to students
    • Professionalism when using the BrainMass name

Each Online TA will have to complete a short tutorial before gaining access to his/her BrainMass Account. We also require that every member read through the Guidelines for Responding to Postings and Essays before signing out any student questions. A Reference Manual is provided within the account of each Online TA and Update Newsletters are distributed periodically.

  3. Payment

We cater to students around the globe, accepting credit card payments in $CAD (Canadian) funds. A standard fee of $3.99 CAD (3.11 USD) is paid for every custom credit; it will cost from 1 to 25 credits to purchase a Custom Post-A-Problem response, depending on the level of difficulty and urgency of the response. Our OTA pay rate works on a sliding scale, as follows: New OTAs are paid 60% of the Credit value recieved by BrainMass for their first 10 responses. After 10 responses have been submitted, OTAs are paid 70% of the Credit value. The remaining funds are retained by BrainMass to cover its hosting and administrative costs.

The solution is then added to the Solution Library. Each time a solution is downloaded, the Online TA responsible for the solution will be paid 50% of the revenue that BrainMass receives. The idea of investing one's time and energy into a Solution Library that creates "royalty-like" revenue is one of the most attractive aspects of the system for many graduate students.

Registered Online TAs have personal accounts (complete with an ID number and password login) on our system. The Financial page of every account tracks the monthly, annual and career earnings of our Online TAs. Monthly earnings of $50 CAD or more are paid on the 15th day of the following month via hyperWALLET, PayPal, or cheque. Monthly balances of less than $50 CAD are rolled over and continue to accumulate until the $50 CAD minimum is reached.

Information about foreign students working in the US and Canada

    2. Send in verification of your credentials within 21 days. We do not require original transcripts; photocopies and scanned images are acceptable as long as they are legible. You can snail mail, fax or email your credentials.

Tre13

About Tre13

Hi,

I am in need of financial help! This is extremely difficult and embarrassing for me to ask for help, but I don't know where else to turn. My whole family is struggling and they have helped all that they can. I am a full-time 4th grade teacher. I teach 4 adult technology classes two nights a week and also work at a gym the rest of the time that I have left. I am a couple thousand dollars behind on my basic bills at this time and every month it just gets worse. I am not lazy, I do not pity myself, for I am very fortunate for what I do have. Though I am struggling, I know that I am luckier than many. I am just scared and I don't want my situation to become worse. I have outstanding debts on credit and student loans already. I am just wanting help for the basics right now (utilities, transportation, rent, food). Because I am single, have no kids, and have a job(s), it is even more difficult to find support in my community. I am very proud to be a teacher, but I feel that as a respected leader in my community I am failing to demonstrate to my students how to be responsible and independent. I have always taken care of myself since I was a teenager and never depended on anyone, not even my parents. Now, I have no choice. Can you help me?
